Make an informed decision on your next purchase of a
car body kit

Urethane or Fiberglass ?

A car body kit and other ground effects are made out of either urethane or fiberglass.

Urethane parts are made of reaction injection molded polyurethane, a material that is lightweight, flexible and resistant to rough weather conditions and everyday road hazards. Because of its flexibility and light weight, parts made out of urethane are usually easier to install. Wings West and Xenon are examples of companies that manufacture a car body kit using high quality urethane.

Fiberglass is a material well-known for its resistance and rigidity. It is crucial to choose the highest quality fiberglass for your car body kit. Many companies create bad quality parts containing wavy patterns on the fiberglass and unsatisfactory fit. Fiberglass components that are hand laid have no waves and are not brittle or weak.

When a part is hand laid, the part will be uniform and will have an even amount of fiberglass throughout the component. Hand laid fiberglass takes the longest, and costs the most but are worth it. Examples of companies manufacturing high quality fiberglass components are Kaminari and Erebuni.

Should you buy a body kit pre-painted or not ?

Some suppliers do not sell pre-painted pieces for 2 reasons: first, unless your vehicle is brand new and only recently put on the road the body man needs to have it in front of him to match its color to the piece he is going to paint. That can be done only by a local body shop. Second, painted items are much more prone to getting scratched in shipment than non-painted items.

Buying apre-painted car body kit is a good idea if your vehicle is freshly out of the dealer since the paint has not been affected yet by weather and road conditions. To achieve the right colour match you will have to provide your supplier with the right information on your vehicle make, model and year as well as the exact colour code of the manufacturer. The paint code is located on the driver side door option sticker. It will be at the bottom of the sticker and begin with the letter U.
