Car door handles and window cranks

Broken car door handles and window cranks do pose a few problems ... to say the least. They make difficult or impossible to open a window or door and make your car's interior look run down. Which means a decrease in resale value ... and less money in your pocket upon trade-in. Replacement cranks and handles are easily available, from your OEM dealer, at local auto parts stores or through online replacement part merchants.

Window cranks and door handles are held in place either by screws right through the middle of the crank or handle's hub or by ring clips on the back of the hub. Check the center of the hub there might be a Phillips, Torx or Allen-head screw, possibly covered by a piece of decorative trim. If this is the case, you simply need the appropriate tool to undo the screw. Then, pulling the handle straight off the splines should be a pice of cake!

If you don't see any screws, you should be able to locate some form of clip on the back side of the crank or handle. The simplest way to remove it is with an inexpensive, special flat tool made just for that purpose. Slip the tool behind the arm of the crank or handle and gently push. The tool is shaped such that it will force the clip out of its retaining groove, easily and smoothly, without breaking or cracking other parts.

When you buy the tool and replacement car door handles, make sure to get a set of spare clips. Why? Simply because the old clip may be flying off in your garage and you may lose it or it might get broken while being removed. To reinstall a screw-mounted handle, push it straight onto its splined shaft. Reinstall the screw and tighten it snugly, but not overly tight. To reinstall a clip-held handle, you must first place the clip in its retaining groove on the back of the new handle. Then push the handle firmly onto the splined shaft. It's that easy and simple!

There you go! I hope these simple tips will help!
