Laser Radar Detectors FAQ

Drivers love laser radar detectors for their ability to warn them of oncoming police checking for speeders. They should not use them to speed but to keep the police "honest". Read our story on abusive practices. Speeders with radar detectors may become dangerous because of their feeling of "immunity" increasing the risk of accidents.

OK back to our main topic which is to learn more about radar detectors.

Are radar detectors illegal in North America?

On the consumer side, certain states and provinces prohibit the sale of laser radar detectors. Some other jurisdictions do not permit the use of the devices but allow their sale because the jammer can be turned off!

Manufacturers of radar detectors state that it is the driver's responsibility to follow local laws. Since the police cannot detect specific anti-detection equipment you can guess that these companies design, develop and market the devices to work around state and provincial laws. It's subtle ... but legal!

Can laser radar detectors be detected when operating?

The development of hardware detection technology has benefited both the drivers and the police. Devices to detect radar detectors have been developed for police officers to identify drivers "in action". Technological development also had to be backed by laws to give police officers the power to stop and fine speeders caught using detection devices.

Can laser radar guns be jammed?

As laser radar detectors improved in frequency and distance, the challenge was increasing for law enforcers. Jamming devices were developed to send out radio signals that created enough interference to return false readings.

Technology and laws clearly had to adapt to stop the cat and mouse game. The laws change, but several american states and canadian provinces have laws that restrict the use of radar and laser detector jamming devices.

How fast can a driver using radar detectors want to go?

As mentionned above, it's not always about speed, sometimes it's about protection against abuse. Sometimes it's about freedom of choice. Certain drivers just don't like to be restrained in their "driving life", be it with seat belts, laser radar detectors, use of headlights during day time, etc.

Conclusion

Several people love the thrill of driving and speeding. They feel more "powerful". Males increase their level of testosterones, female like the added adrenaline. Whatever the reason, speeding drivers cannot avoid one major reality : speed is dangerous and it can take lives.
